Pourquoi les orchestres français restent aux portes de l'élite mondiale

Se faire connaître. Sortir de l'anonymat d'un paysage musical surchargé en partant à la rencontre du public. Du 14 au 23 novembre, l'Association française des orchestres (AFO) lance Orchestres en fête !, première manifestation du genre. Quatre-vingts concerts à travers la France, des répétitions publiques, ateliers, rencontres avec les artistes... Philippe Fanjas, directeur de l'AFO, y voit "une manière de mettre en lumière une pratique culturelle moins visible que l'opéra, mais qui recense chaque saison, autour d'une trentaine d'orchestres permanents (dont le budget global de 220 millions d'euros est supporté à 82 % par les finances publiques), près de 3 200 concerts et plus de 2,5 millions de spectateurs".

Beaucoup d'activité, donc. Mais peu de rayonnement, notamment à l'étranger. Pourquoi, par exemple, aucun orchestre français ne figure dans les dix meilleurs mondiaux, aux côtés des Philharmonies de Vienne et de Berlin, du Concertgebouw d'Amsterdam, de l'Orchestre symphonique de Londres et des grandes formations américaines (Cleveland, Philadelphie, Boston, New York, Chicago, Los Angeles) ?

"Les Français adorent la musique, mais ils ne l'aiment pas." La boutade de Berlioz serait-elle toujours vraie aujourd'hui ? La raison historique d'une France littéraire, privilégiant le théâtre et le cinéma, semble encore d'actualité. "Les orchestres sont le reflet des institutions, affirme Philippe Fanjas. Il nous faut prendre aussi en considération la place déclinante des cultures savantes dans notre société, la confusion avec le divertissement. Sans parler du niveau des élites qui leur fait préférer la culture populaire."

S'y ajoutent des causes plus spécifiques, comme le manque de vrais auditoriums en France. "La musique ne prend toute sa valeur que dans une salle adaptée. Elle n'est pas complètement à sa place dans le réseau des théâtres et des scènes nationales", poursuit Philippe Fanjas. Un constat que confirme Graziella Contratto, qui dirige l'Orchestre des pays de Savoie depuis six ans : "Pour nous, orchestres nomades, c'est parfois difficile de faire des programmes ambitieux, car nous dépendons de directeurs de salle peu connaisseurs et souvent très conservateurs."

Les dysfonctionnements viennent aussi des orchestres eux-mêmes, et des relations entretenues avec leur chef. Ainsi Marc Minkowski, fondateur des Musiciens du Louvre et directeur musical du Sinfonia Varsovia, constate : "En France, on est élevé dans un esprit de contestation permanent. Cela commence avec les profs à l'école." Il est ainsi de notoriété publique que les musiciens français ne sont pas tendres avec leur chef, pouvant aller jusqu'à saboter un concert en cas de conflit.

PRODUCTION DE SOLISTES

Mais Fayçal Karoui, directeur musical de l'Orchestre de Pau-pays de Béarn, stigmatise aussi les chefs qui cumulent les postes. "Que dirait-on d'un maire qui ne serait là que quinze à vingt semaines par an ?, interroge-t-il. Sans parler du fossé entre le salaire moyen d'un musicien (de 3 500 à 4 000 euros) et celui d'un chef qui touche 30 000 euros par concert ?"

Cette coupure entre musiciens commence tôt. Jusqu'aux années 1980, l'enseignement des conservatoires français était très tourné vers la production de solistes. Jouer dans l'orchestre n'apportait que peu de crédit. Difficile alors de construire cette tradition qui caractérise par exemple les orchestres germaniques.

A l'étranger, on se souvient de l'aura de la mythique Société des concerts du conservatoire, qui révéla à Wagner la quintessence de la Neuvième Symphonie de Beethoven, ce que n'avait pas su faire l'Orchestre de Leipzig. Mais les ensembles français d'aujourd'hui restent peu connus. Pour le délégué à la musique au ministère de la culture, Pascal Dumay, la "politique discographique des majors, qui a longtemps privilégié les orchestres d'Europe du Nord et des Etats-Unis" tient sa part de responsabilité.

Les orchestres français ne manquent pourtant pas d'atouts. Le chef de l'Orchestre national de Lyon, Yun Märkl, vante "une culture de la précision et des sonorités", Kwamé Ryan, baguette de l'Orchestre national Bordeaux-Aquitaine, "une curiosité que n'ont pas les musiciens allemands, plus stricts et systématiques dans l'interprétation".

De son côté, Jean-Claude Casadesus, patron de l'Orchestre national de Lille, qui a dirigé l'Orchestre français des jeunes pendant trois ans, souligne l'évolution psychologique des musiciens : "Les jeunes sont plus professionnels que leurs aînés. On est sortis du culte du soliste, et le métier de musicien d'orchestre a acquis ses lettres de noblesse."

Car s'il est une chose unanimement reconnue, c'est la valeur des musiciens français, dont la qualité est, pour le chef d'orchestre et compositeur Pierre Boulez, comparable à celle des grands musiciens étrangers. "L'Orchestre de Paris peut techniquement rivaliser avec celui de Berlin. Mais il souffre lui aussi du manque général de cohésion et de cohérence."

Et Boulez de déplorer le manque d'une direction artistique forte à la tête des orchestres. "Aux Etats-Unis, un orchestre est symbolisé par son chef. Regardez Georg Solti et l'Orchestre de Chicago, celui de Cleveland du temps de Dohnanyi, sans parler de George Szell. Là, c'était vraiment l'identification totale." Il espère que l'ouverture de la Nouvelle Philharmonie de Paris, en 2012, une salle entièrement dédiée aux orchestres, "leur donnera une impulsion salutaire".

It took me two weeks of no sleep, tiredness, anxiety and so on and so forth to bump into reality. I am not the bad person at the office, I am the victim of my bosses' madness and jealousy.
Still need time to re-build the mouse-in-me that loved working, that was lively and so on. But, identifying the harm is a first step. Got too hurt by the racist words, the slanderous terms on my curriculum, the violent words and insults...

A bit disappointed by the circulation of the works of art. Thought they would come from prestigious places, and so on and so forth (NB: the exhibition is part of the Saison Culturelle program...). Quite a lot of them came actually from the Centre Pompidou itself. The major parts of the works exhibited came from Milano.
Apart from that, lovely pieces by Carra (I'm not sure of the spelling)

We've written on several occasions about Blurb, which offers the prolific content producers of Generation C high-quality book publishing. For those interested in creating a magazine, Issuu is a new site that converts users' documents into interactive, magazine-style online publications that can be viewed directly in a web browser.

Whereas most online publications today (other than websites and blogs) are still presented either as PDFs or other downloadable files, Issuu's viewer features full-screen mode and vector graphics to create the online equivalent of a print magazine right from within a web browser. In addition to uploading their own PDF documents for publication, users of the site can browse the works of others and create their own personal libraries; through its community features, they can discuss and share what they see. It's like a YouTube for magazines, and the result is what Issuu calls a "living library" of the best publications on the web—readers can gain access to zines that have a very limited reach, and micro-publishers gain access to a global readership. Which is what blogs already offer, of course. But some still prefer the look of a magazine. All content is hosted for free on Issuu, and once a document has been uploaded, it can also be posted in preview or full size on any website, blog or social network, including Facebook and MySpace.

Michael Hansen, Issuu's cofounder and CEO, explains: "We've been watching how B2B companies charge large amounts for putting documents online with less advanced technology than ours. We want to empower anyone, businesses as well as privates, to publish online using the best technology available. By making Issuu free and providing hosting and viral tools, we see no reason why great publications shouldn't find the worldwide audience they deserve."

California-based Issuu just launched in February, but it already has an interesting mix of users on the site, including designers, editors, agencies and artists. It was also named a finalist in the SXSW Interactive Web Awards. One to adapt on a localized or niche basis?

Even as consumers spend more and more time online, they continue to crave the comfort of the printed page. MagCloud, a new self-publishing magazine service from HP Labs, is making the most of these conflicting desires by enabling anyone who can create a PDF to publish a magazine.

How it works? Users can upload a PDF of their magazine for free, creating their own profit margins by calculating the difference between their cover price and MagCloud’s charge of USD 0.20 per page, plus shipping. The concept builds on the success of companies that offer a simple, online method for consumers to self-publish books (such as Blurb, which we’ve covered in the past), and on the understanding that members of Generation C are eager to share their creative output, and expect to be paid for their efforts. Whether they’re professional or pro-am journalists, photographers, designers or entrepreneurs, MagCloud provides them with a no-risk business and communication opportunity, and the ability to tap into infinite niche audiences that don't yet have a mag to call their own.
