Seen, Charles Matton @ MEP

Good advice from the mouse: if you wanna go to the Maison européenne de la photographie, it's free on Wednesdays, starting from 5 pm!
So, yesterday, I visited the Charles Matton exhibition, and the one on Italy, at Maison européenne de la Photographie, with Nonor and Emilie.
These two exhibitions somehow succeeded in reconciling me with the MEP.
The first time, in Spring 2006 (???) was somehow contrasted. I discovered the place together with Virginie, Noëlla, Frank. We were tempted by the Raymond Depardon exhibition, which was excellent indeed, but it was coupled with an exhibition by Bernard Faucon, a retrospective...
We really enjoyed Raymond Depardon’s works (to the point that the exhibition catalog became Frederique’s birthday present). Depardon knew how to catch politicians’ truth in their solitude, far away from those people they have to seduce, in order to dominate them... Faucon’s retrospective was a disaster. Miss mash of kitch, unsane representations close to pedophilia... Thank god, that was a retrospective, he is not supposed to create anymore!

So, let’s go back to Matton. Matton works on the intimacy of the space, on the architectural nakedness so to say, tainted with a stiff upper lip humour (see trompe l’oeils for instance).
The whole exhibition was surrounded by airs from Debussy, Bach... Was really suiting the exhibition. After all, Debussy also works on shadows, lights....

Matton satisfies the share of shadow deep inside each of us, that voyeuristic desire that leads us to see, to want to know. Who has never dreamt of penetrating in an artist’s universe? I really liked the Bacon Atelier, even though the box did not manage to translate the bright light inhabiting the whole atelier. By the way, interesting photo: astonishingly as it may seem, the atelier seems very bright, though Bacon’s works are stamped by dark harmonies...

Then, after visiting these thrilling exhibitions, we moved to a cute resto, eating crepes, then, to a bar, La Perla, have a last drink to fight against the coming winter!
